Motown and Wall Of Sound imprints were all over Don’t Go, You Sound Like You’re Sick and She’s A Sensation.” I loved the Bo Diddley feel of the drums and the change to a straight beat in the break, which gave it the sound of an early Kinks or Who song. “It’s Not My Place (In The 9 To 5 World) sounded radio ready, even if radio wasn’t willing. “I loved the sound, and I loved a lot of the songs,” the drummer wrote. “It sounded radio ready, even if radio wasn’t willing” In his book, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As A Ramone, Marky Ramone recalled the Pleasant Dreams sessions with genuine relish. I was against the band doing that.”Įlsewhere, though, Gouldman’s input was more than welcomed. They were trying to go lighter, looking for ways to be more commercial. All I wanted to do was keep our fans happy and not sell out. “It really could have used another two or three punk songs. “Working with Graham was easy, in that he was always a gentleman, but I knew going in that Pleasant Dreams wasn’t going to be the type of album I wanted,” Johnny Ramone later recalled. Yet while their new producer greatly enjoyed the sessions (“They were fastidious, they were conscientious and I had a great time,” Gouldman told Bullz-Eye in a 2007 interview), his quest to help Ramones craft killer radio-friendly pop songs only caused further schisms within the band. And during the Pleasant Dreams sessions, at New York’s Mediasound Studios, Gouldman also came up with ideas for vocal harmonies and guitar overdubs, and taught the band to use the bass as a melodic – rather than purely rhythmic – instrument. Indeed, the renowned Mancunian had penned such huge 60s hits as Bus Stop, No Milk Today and For Your Love for British Invasion bands the group adored – The Hollies, Herman’s Hermits and The Yardbirds. Ramones certainly respected Gouldman’s track record as a songwriter. “All I wanted to do was keep our fans happy and not sell out” Ramones wanted to team up with rising Siouxsie And The Banshees/U2 producer Steve Lillywhite, but Sire rejected that suggestion, instead insisting that 10cc’s Graham Gouldman take the helm for Pleasant Dreams. Though End Of The Century was their best-performing album, it only peaked at No.44 in the US (it would hit No.14 in the UK), and Sire again insisted the group work with a name producer for their next record. To add to their woes, Ramones were still expected to produce the goods in the charts. Johnny later married Linda, but their relationship put the bandmates’ friendship under a strain from which it never properly recovered. The lack of communication was due to the almost irreparable rift between Joey and Johnny Ramone, which sprang from the guitarist beginning a relationship with Joey’s former girlfriend, Linda Daniele. You can’t run an organisation or a band or a government like that.” “Me and John had almost no communication whatsoever. “It would probably have split up most bands,” Joey continued. “There’s a lot of strong stuff on it,” vocalist Joey Ramone recalled in Everett True’s Hey Ho Let’s Go: The Story Of The Ramones, while also conceding that the album was recorded during “a real rocky time” for the group. “It would have probably split up most bands” Released in the summer of 1981, in the slipstream of the big-budget, Phil Spector-helmed End Of The Century, the record emerged from an especially stressful time in the New York City quartet’s history and, after stalling at No.58 on the Billboard 200, it was unfairly branded a failure. That means the editor who ends up using it, has to unlink and delete a useless audio track from their timeline. You may be wondering “Can’t I just erase the audio in the timeline and export the clip? What difference does it make?” The answer is yes, you can do that, but the resulting stock asset will still have a silent audio track attached when someone downloads it. For example, a shot of a roaring lion, isn’t much different than a shot of a yawning lion without the audio. There are some instances when audio will enhance the clip. In most cases stock clips are better without audio. We recommend not taking up extra space with your files.įor each of the three resolution settings, there are two presets with different audio settings. There are just two empty seats taking up space. If you put eight people in a ten-passenger van, it’s still a ten-passenger van, but it didn’t magically make two extra people. This color information is not added or interpolated into the resulting file somehow. Putting 8-bit files in 10-bit containers does not give them 10-bits of color. The bit depth determines the number of colors the file can reproduce accurately, and you simply cannot create color where it doesn’t exist. Even 8-bit 4:2:2 source footage won’t gain anything from using the larger 10-bit ProRes preset. You might be tempted to output a lower spec source file with the QuickTime preset in order to increase its quality. For this reason, we recommend using H.264 presets when you capture your source footage at 8-bit or 4:2:0. They contain setting that deliver a high-quality image in a small file – but not so small that quality becomes suspect. The Adobe Stock presets that use H.264 fall on the lower side of robustness. Regardless of the delivery or file integrity, H.264 is a highly efficient codec that delivers excellent image quality in a relatively small package. In other cases, it can deliver files with limited technical properties for ease of delivery over the web and streaming platforms. Sometimes the H.264 compression scheme is used to create very robust file formats that support high-end needs similar to ProRes. H.264 covers a broad range of applications and codecs. Although this was a small gripe when playing such an immersive game such as Cuphead it really takes you out of the moment which you get lost in but I think this does, in the end, add to the charm of the game showing much like animation at the time it was set that it is not perfect but it was as they learned and developed which is what Cuphead is all about. Because of this the passion emanates from the visuals provided, this could also be the reason why many like myself say that the game feels like the old cartoons which are important because those cartoons build up all of the foundations for Cuphead to be a success and provided the perfect world for the developers of Cuphead to put there heart and soul into the game and get it just how they wanted.Īlthough I do love how Cuphead has handled its art style although I do feel that the game lacks in color on occasion which can make the game feel sluggish, these times are few and far between and it may well just be down to the way in which it was created that gives this effect. You get to know particular designs and the reasons why they designed the characters the way they did’ (Giret, 2018)įrom this quote, we can see why the game has the art style it does and just why so much passion was poured into its creation as well as this you can see why it was important for Moldenhauer to get the process as authentic as he could as to him it was part of his childhood and he wanted to do it justice. ‘I’ve watched a lot of Fleischer cartoons – a whole lot. I think through using this process that Moldenhauer really captured the essence of what those cartoons were and translated it perfectly into a game environment, which is part of the reason why everyone is in awe of the visuals of the game as it envokes the exact same feelings as the old cartoons from its roots while presenting them in a new and fresh way packaged with actually fun gameplay and a score to match. Looking at how Cuphead’s lead art director made sure that he went through the long way using rotoscope animation which is a hard and time-consuming process, just so that the game would have the exact same feel as the old cartoons that he wanted the game to be based on. ‘hand-painted watercolor backgrounds, and hand-drawn fonts,’ (Futon, 2018)Ĭuphead has some amazing visuals created by the art team, this is mostly thanks to the detailed watercolour backgrounds that reside in the main overworld and on every background of each level, this was done so that the art team could faithfully create a 1930’s feel as most cartoons at the time had a distinct background being created with watercolor and using this effect shows how much work went into creating each stage of the game as they couple this with the bouncy animation style and it makes for a fully faithfull recreation and a game that feels like your playing a 1930’s cartoon. The inspiration clearly comes from the design of Cuphead and his enemies all shearing similar characteristic to that used in the classic Disney animations. Although the games art director ‘Chad Moldenhauer obviously took inspiration from a multitude of sources that use this style there is hard to argue about the overbearing favorite of Disney and there character Mickey Mouse who is probably one of modern-day cultures most well know characters to use this style. The first thing I want to discuss is the design of Cuphead and Mugman and how it was clearly chosen to emulate the old limited and tedious animation and art style of rubber hose where characters and objects appear with long tube-like libs and everything is very bouncy and flamboyant. From doing some research into the development of Cuphead I discovered all kinds of different techniques that helped breath new life into the old animation style of the 1930’s and do something that most other games don’t by making me actually care about this style and appreciate just how much work went into its creation. Cuphead has been one of my favorite games of recent memory, it combines solid gameplay, a good soundtrack, and a beautiful art style all of which come together to give Cuphead its charm. From looking at Cuphead it’s hard to deny that it was inspired by Rubber hose animation from the Characters design to how it was actually created having every frame painstakingly hand drawn all emulate that 1930’s era of cartoon animation. |
